I’m Martin Walsh, I am self-employed and I work across the beautiful county of North Yorkshire. Much of my work relates to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and for many years I worked for Business Link York and North Yorkshire serving small to medium size businesses (SMEs) providing impartial ICT advice and support. Right now we live in challenging economic times where expenditure on ICT needs to be undertaken in such a way as to meet identifiable needs, to deliver measurable benefits, and to be both manageable and scaleable. For many if not all SMEs, it is useful to determine how investment in ICT can reduce costs and add value to the products and services you offer.
For the home user, whilst expenditure on ICT may be made for very different reasons, the challenges of identify what to buy, where to buy it and when to buy it remain; as does the need for considering its ongoing management. A secure PC today is unlikely to be secure in six (6) week’s time if it isn’t managed appropriately. The good news is there are many excellent resources available free for home use.
I am comfortable working with both SMEs and the home user, whether its addressing some of the questions and needs outlined above or delivering on web projects such as personal or business blogs, integrated e-commerce solutions or specific coding requirements. I have considerable experience of using WordPress and presently manage around two hundred WordPress sites – many of them fully fledged e-commerce sites promoting and retailing real tangible products – as well as those that offer digital downloads and online services.
In summary, this website is an opportunity for me to promote my services and a resource for those that visit it; whilst at the same time it’s an outlet for the occasional rants and raves that my work sometimes engenders … and if my spare time interests spill over into this website then just maybe that might blow off the dust and clear the cobwebs from what is, lets face it, a dry and boring subject for many!

WordPress in a Day
I also now offer a special, limited availability ‘WordPress in a Day’ service. This is where for those projects of particular interest, I visit the client at their home or place of work and together, we create the WordPress web presence you need to achieve your goals. This might be an integrated e-commerce solution using WordPress; a club or charity website; a business blog to complement an existing website; or simply a personal blog reflecting an interest or theme. The ‘WordPress in a Day’ service does take considerable preparation since the domain name needs to be registered, the hosting contracted for and the DNS settings configured prior to the visit to maximise the progress and achievements that can be made on the day. The project scope and milestones also need prior agreement.
I am prepared to travel throughout Northern England to deliver this special service (further distances by mutual agreement). The working day would begin at 8.30am and finish around 6pm. Preparatory materials are provided to assist you in maximising the return on the visit; the only technical requirement is a broadband connection and a working kettle for tea breaks!
The cost is £350 exclusive of travel, with a non-refundable deposit of £50 charged to confirm the booking and for pre-visit materials and support. The £50 is deducted from the £350. The balance being payable by cash or PayPal (inc. Credit Card) on the day, or via cheque five (5) days before the visit.

Web Projects
Much of the work I do can be split between remedial and new web projects for Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs). I am prepared to travel across most of North Yorkshire to meet and discuss a project, and charge travel at cost for fuel only. There are no call out or minimum charges for my time. Bespoke Coding
On many occasions you may need a modest utility or piece of code to meet a specific requirement, perhaps to avoid time consuming and costly data entry or labour. I have had the opportunity to help many clients by providing solutions to their problems. A recent example was the need to automatically convert product data held within MS Excel, as internal product records, into a different form suitable for populating a WordPress driven e-commerce solution. Another was the requirement for a desktop driven solution to control an Internet hosted PHP script , on an ‘as and when’ basis, for duplicating (one to many) a specific directory structure and content across domains and sub-domains.
